Goings on..

1. James has colic and reflux and an ear infection - it has been a long and hard few weeks, so we came home to Maryland to get some help from my parents/aunts/sister (I love my family) and some rest.

2. I forgot to pack breast pads, and I just ran out of the few I had in my diaper bag. The problem is that it's late here, and we're all too tired to go to the store, so I have 2 of James's diapers in my bra - so far so good.

3. I'm searching for a really good chocolate chip cookie recipe, so if anyone has one they would like to share I would be so grateful. Please email it to laurensydneydyer@gmail.com. The recipes I have been using don't cut it, and I need chocolate chip cookies to survive.

The diapers in the bra...you poor thing. I hope your family takes really good care of you. It is not easy to take care of a sick baby.

hopefully you know who i am when i comment. i love the dyers and everyone related. maybe one day we will meet.
so i have never had to deal with colic... but i have had a few reflux babies. i hope he is doing better soon.
good idea going home. that always helps.
one thing i thought of while reading your post... no one told me until my third baby. but it is a good idea to wear a bra always when you are nursing--day time and night time. there are good sleeping nursing bras out there. it seems to help with leakage problems, too much milk being produced and other stuff.
though i am impressed with your innovation with the diapers. great idea.

Here's my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe, courtesy of _The New Best Recipe Cookbook_, which is our Bible in the kitchen.

Mix:
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1 & 1/2 sticks butter

Add and mix:
2 tsp. vanilla
1 large egg and 1 egg yolk

Then add and mix the following, which should already be combined together:
2 cups and 2 Tbsp. flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt

Then add and mix the chocolate chips, as many as you want, but I like 3/4 cup to 1 cup.

Divide into large balls (about 1/4 cup each) and cook on 325 F. for 15 minutes. If you cook two sheets at a time, switch them halfway through. Make sure to remove them at 15 minutes even if they don't look done. They're supposed to be soft.

A couple notes:

You may need less flour if you use something other than all-purpose white (like unbleached).

Also dough balls should be large (really like 1/4 cup).

Don't skimp on the vanilla. Seriously, have you ever eaten something and thought to yourself, "mmhhh ... tasty ... but maybe too much vanilla ..." Of course not.

Use real butter. Margarine will work in a pinch, but using margarine in this cookie recipe is like filling a Porsche with low-octane gasoline. Hey, it's a Porsche -- spring for premium.

Preheat oven completely before you start cooking. If possible, use seal-pat sheets or, if you don't have any, then parchment paper.

Finally, you may want to call Sharalee and have her double-check this recipe. I'm 99% certain that it's correct, but I'm doing it from memory. (My main concern is whether it was 1 stick or 1 and 1/2 stick of butter ... I'm pretty sure it was 1 and 1/2 ...) If I'm wrong, I'll make you a complementary batch of biscotti.

Best of luck padding your "Buestenhalter," as they say in German,

Ben
